Chapter Nineteen

When they stepped out of her dented Charger in the police station’s parking lot on Friday morning, Ava glanced around and then her shoulders slumped with obvious relief.

No one was there to see them arriving at the station together, first thing in the morning.

Eli knew he should feel the same way. He didn’t want rumors starting and he didn’t want Ava to feel uncomfortable, especially after everything she’d shared with him yesterday. Still, he wished she hadn’t looked quite so relieved.

He also wished she hadn’t been quite so embarrassed after she’d kissed him, or quite so shy the rest of the evening. Not that they’d spent a lot of time together. She’d pointed him to the guest bathroom and he’d showered the smoke off as best he could. He’d tossed his uniform in her washing machine, even though ultimately it would go in the trash. But he’d had nothing else to wear. He’d waited out the washer and dryer time wrapped in a towel and trying to pretend he didn’t notice all her furtive glances while they devoured a hastily-warmed frozen pizza together.

Then he’d climbed back up the stairs to her guest bedroom, where he’d passed out until this morning. He’d had her swing by his hotel so he could get a change of clothes, but his vehicle was still in the Jasper PD parking lot.

They’d found Lacey groggy and clearly in some pain. But she was moving around, walking gingerly and her tail had wagged like mad when she’d seen Ava.

He and Ava had both pet Lacey and praised her until Marie had finally given them an understanding smile and told them Lacey needed a chance to rest some more. Then they’d climbed into Ava’s vehicle and she’d slid back into that anxious silence.

Now, she glanced around the empty parking lot one more time and then hurried inside, not giving him a chance to take advantage of the fact that they were alone.

Not that he would have said or done anything in the police station parking lot. No, he’d already told her his plan last night. He understood her desire to press pause on whatever was happening between them while they were working together. But he wasn’t giving up.

As soon as he followed her inside, they were surrounded by other members of the department, officers slapping them on the back or checking that they were okay.

Eli nodded, giving praise where it was due: to Lacey for warning them, for physically putting herself in front of him when he hadn’t realized what she was saying. He’d thought she’d seen the same figure he had, running for the woods or the shed. In retrospect,
